Hair Brushing and Scalp Massage
Probably one of the most hauntingly alluring images on the silver screen, at least in my eyes, is watching a woman, usually the star or heroine of the film, sitting in front of the mirror of her bureau, brushing her hair. This is never a neutral statement in the plot of the film. Sometimes it portrays seduction, sometimes self-absorption, and other times, independence. In all three scenarios, our heroine is telling us that she is her own woman and that she cares about herself.
Then there are the heroines who sit before a bureau to have their hair adoringly brushed out by someone else: a lover, a mother, a sister, or a servant. Is she privileged, spoiled, adored, or all three? In my mind, such images have not always served us well. Within families and those with close bonds, such moments are, indeed, endearing. But I also feel that they have artificially created an inflated need for hair parlors and salons. This does not mean that I am totally against such establishments. Yet why not become the master of your own Crowning Glory?
If hairdressers do not pay attention to the lunar cycle and just cut your hair willy- nilly, and if they put all sorts of poisons with fancy names on your hair, they are ruining your health. You are much better off staying at home and creating your own hair revolution by following the steps and techniques I am sharing with you here in this series.
Whether you brush your own hair or are groomed by another, the act of grooming and preening your locks conveys a powerful message of what it means to care for and
attend to yourself and others. If this was not the case, the image of hair being brushed and styled would carry no weight in our minds and no director would waste footage of a film or stage time in a play on this display.
But, for me, the impact of viewing these images pales in comparison to witnessing the acts of animals grooming and preening in the wilds of nature. In fact, the entire basis of my hair brushing ritual did not come from watching silver screen icons or seeing my own mother or grandmother do their hair. Rather, my inspiration came from watching swans.
On my many adventures to the British Isles, I spent some time in the Cotswolds, near Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of William Shakespeare. It was there beside the peaceful shores of the River Avon that I spent hours watching her majesty`s birds-her Mute Swans. For many cultures, swans are the most regal of birds, and in the British Isles, the Mute Swan is under the direct protection of the royal sovereign. Royalty always protects royalty.
Just as when I was a little boy regaling in nature, I let my eyes feast on these beautiful creatures as they groomed and preened themselves. Swans, as with all other water birds, preen themselves with their natural oils. They bring their heads to their backs and stick their beaks into the tail where their oil pot is. With their beak coated, they spread their wings to distribute the oil. They meticulously brush and smooth their Elixir Oils across each feather. With this process, they groom and oil each feather for strand for protection, health, and conditioning. Following the swans` example, I teach my clients to brush in a qay that distributes their natural oils to coat each strand for protection and health. And if you have ever watched swans in a lake, you would agree that these creatures exemplify majestic beauty.

From watching this preening and grooming ritual, it came to me that just like the swans, if we want to properly nourish our hairs with the natural oils we are born with, we should brush our hair in a very similar manner. In these matters, nature is never wrong. So, in my HairRevolution, I encourage one and all to re-direct their eyes, ears, noses, taste buds, fingertips, and minds away from the drone of industry and media to listen to and experience,once again,nature. I emphasize in particular the beauty and magic of grooming ourselves as nature intended. This is what I shall share with you here.
Brushing your hair properly is one of the most important elements in the maintenance and rejuvenation of your hair, especially when combined with a scalp massage. It is second only to proper diet and the use of wild-crafted, organic, holistic Morrocco Method Hair Care products.
Daily brushing of the hair and scalp is far more cleansing than any commercial, artificial shampoo. Brushing eliminates waste materials,the deposits of uric acid crystals, catarrh, and other acids and impurities that build up and become encrusted on the scalp. Brushing also stimulates the capillaries, increasing blood circulation and the transport of oxygen and nutrients to the hair stem, root and bulb. Most importantly, daily brushing stimulates hormone- and oil- producing glands, which keep the pores of the hair and scalp open, allowing them to breathe and retain their natural oils.
Hair loss problems can almost always be traced to the sebaceous glands,the natural oil-producing and lubricating system of your hair. If the glands are out of balance, they will either over- or under produce sebum,the natural fatty oils that deliver nutrients to the hair. When they overproduce sebum, the hair follicles drown in their own oil, which interferes with the nourishment of the roots. The scalp is then weakened, and the hair begins to fall out. When the sebaceous glands under produce sebum, the hair roots and follicles become undernourished, causing the hair to become dry and brittle and eventually fall out.
Often, the foreign matter from mousses, gels, hair sprays, and artificial shampoos and conditioners clog the pores and follicles of the scalp as well. These dangerous chemicals not only interfere with nourishment to the roots, they also disrupt natural hair growth by confusing the sebaceous glands, which regulate the fall-out and reproductive cycle of the hair. These chemicals are also ingested into the bloodstream, causing many other health problems.
Brushing is an excellent way to prevent these kinds of problems. Proper brushing and scalp massage, when used in combination with organic, holistic shampoos, helps bring the sebaceous glands into balance by cleansing the scalp and stimulating glands and capillaries, ensuring a nourishing blood flow to the follicles.
Because of its cleansing effect on the hair and scalp, brushing is a form of dry shampooing. When done correctly, it is also an excellent, natural conditioner. By stimulating the sebaceous glands, brushing helps distribute sebum throughout the hair and scalp, making the hair stronger, more resilient, and more manageable. By coating the hair with sebum, brushing helps prevent the excessive evaporation of moisture, giving your hair more natural sheen, body, and texture.
