Crystal Decanter
How can I tell If something is Crystal ?
I have two, I think crystal liquor decanters in a holding rack.. There is no writing on the rack that I can see.. Should and where would I look on the decanters. And what would I be looking for ?

Good question.
Funny I can usually always tell maybe it is a combination of these factors.
There are a few ways to know:
Often there is a small label with the makers name – those labels can be stuck there for a long time. If there is a label – just check the maker – sometimes there are labels on glass as well.
You may see a small etched signature or makers name on the bottom somewhere.
It is heavy. Crystal has more weight to it than glass. Lead crystal is very heavy. If your decanter is fairly heavy it is probably crystal.
It is sharp cut. The edges are very sharp if it has facets – with glass the cuts are never very sharply edged.
Sometimes with glass as well as the edges not being sharp you can see a seam where it was formed in a mold.
Look at cheap facetted glass items such as butter dishes or salt shakers and you will see what I mean. Crystal never has those seams.
In light it will act as a prism and show the full spectrum of colours.
These are signs it is crystal – it won’t tell you how good the crystal is but the cut and clarity and weight (similar to a diamond) will tell you a lot.
If you are hoping it is worth anything – any thing of value will have a mark on it somewhere telling you who made it.
